The Dexter breed is a small native breed of cattle. It is a dual-purpose breed, with the average weight of a cow being some 300 – 350kg’s and standing 92cm – 107cm at the shoulder. There are two recognized types, short legged and non-short, both of which have their equal merits.
The breed comes in three colours, predominately black, but also red and dun. Most are horned although a very few naturally polled animals are becoming available.

Our herd of Dexters was formed over lockdown in 2020 beginning with 8 cows, some in calf. Fast forward three years and we have 16 breeding females, our bull Rollo and 24 steers/calves. Rollo is a naturally polled Dexter with a very laid back temperament, both which passes on to his offspring. The herd is predominantly red although we have a handful of black and dun cows.
The dexter steer calves mostly go for beef through the onsite farm shop. Dexter beef is absolutely fantastic and although smaller than commercial beef what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in flavour. Females related to our bull tend to find new homes with other Dexter breeders; with the breed becoming more popular with small holders due to their size, docile manner and rise in consumers being more choosey about where their meat comes from.
Dexters have a great personalities, they’re an ideal breed of cattle for children to get involved with and people who have very little experience with handling cows. We often find ourselves on an evening wondering up to sit with them and enjoy a little bit of quiet time.
